Welcome to Penguin & Owl Literacy! I’m Ms. Shauna, the founder, and I’m so happy you're here. As an Academic Specialist focused on helping struggling students in English language and Literacy, I’m dedicated to unlocking the potential in every learner and cracking a smile on my students' faces.

With over 7 years of experience and a Master's in Early Childhood Education and Research, I’ve seen firsthand how effective literacy instruction can transform lives. It gives students' confidence and builds their self-esteem. 

I base my teaching practice on the Science of Reading, a body of research about how the brain learns to read. This research from scientists, researchers, and educators in the fields of cognitive psychology, linguistics, neuroscience, and more are all in agreement. It essentially states that students need explicit instruction in the essential components of reading: phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary. That's where I come in.
